Scope:
Identification of representative sites displaying effects of dryland salinity in the Dawson catchment:
- Landholder liaison and site identification
- Soil sampling and characterisation
- Groundwater condition characterisation
- Determination of likely salinity process
- Design of site rehabilitation options
- Design and establishment of commercial forestry trials as a component of overall site rehabilitation
Benefit to Client:
Dryland salinity is a serious problem leading to land productivity decline, soil erosion and water quality decline in the Dawson River catchment. The project provided the client with an understanding of the processes contributing to saline outbreaks in the catchment, and enabled evaluation of targeted forestry plantings as a commercial option to managing salinity in the Dawson. The trial target plantings also provided a basis for evaluating commercial species options for wider adoption.
