  • Scope:

    Botanical survey of remnant Semi Evergreen Vine Thickets (SEVT) in central Queensland and assessment for species occurrence, diversity, and ecological attributes. The objective of the survey was to develop an inventory of both remnant and regrowth species occurring in the mine precinct. The aim was to define species diversity, representation and ecological attributes of SEVT communities in the district to support a methodology for the introduction of this ecosystem into the mine site rehabilitation program.

  • Challenge:

    SEVT is an ndangeredvegetation community affected by both mining and agriculture in central Queensland.  It ahs been reduced to 17% of its original area. Prior attempts to establish on mine spoil have been unsuccessful.  The ability to include SEVT in the palette of mine rehabilitation options will contribute to conservation of this vegetation community, improve vegetation connectivity and regional biodiversity, and meet stated community expectations.

  • Solution:

    In orger to underpin design of an approach to revegetation of SEVT communities, Verterra proposed and undertook transect surveys of remnant native communities ot understand the ecological attributes of the component species in order to achieve balanced representation of species across canopy structual characteristics and habit, and improve the capacity to replicate natural habitat function.

    The project provided the client with previously unavailable information on species and ecological attributes to support species selection and rehabilitation methodology for mine spoil rehabilitation projects.
