Gippsland Water Carbon Offset Program: Planning a Carbon bio-sequestration project

Gippsland Water Carbon Offset Program: Planning a Carbon bio-sequestration project

Specifications

  • Client: Gippsland Water
  • Scope:

Gippsland Water engaged the Verterra, MBAC, Corporate Carbon consortium to deliver a plan for a proposed carbon bio-sequestration project.

The consortium reviewed the range of carbon methods relevant to the property and presented a summary of attributes, requirements, sequestration profile, implementation cost and returns for each.  A comparison of advantages and disadvantages of each methods was as a matrix to facilitate comparison as the basis for the client’s decision on which method to adopt.

Carbon sequestration by Environmental plantings was adopted as the method of choice.  The consortium prepared a detailed implementation plan including mapping of Carbon Estimation Areas, registration procedures, fully costed implementation plan, and preparation of a reporting pro-forma and carbon estimation calculator.  Additional opportunities for carbon abatement through improvements to existing business activities were also identified for subsequent adoption.

  • Challenge:

Gippsland Water has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 24% by 2025 and to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and required assistance to review, recommend method options to provide both carbon sequestration and biodiversity outcomes, and design a project implementation plan to provide value to the wider rural land management business.

  • Solution:

Recognising the diversity of specialist skills required to establish and operate ERF projects, a consortium was formed among three parties with a long-established working history to provide a comprehensive service covering the full scope of Gippsland Water’s requirements.

  • Benefit to Client:

In addition to sound knowledge and experience in carbon abatement projects, the consortium brought a depth of experience in practical land management for conservation and production that enabled the recommended carbon strategy to be integrated into, and add value to the wider business.
