Wyaralong Revegetation Monitoring 2017

Wyaralong Revegetation Monitoring 2017

Specifications

  • Client: Seqwater
  • Scope:

In 2017, Seqwater engaged Verterra to complete monitoring and reporting with respect to  two major offsets established in 2011 and 2012.

    Eastern Corridor Project
Established 213 ha of native vegetation to enhance a corridor between Flinders Peak and Main Range vegetation communities and offset dam construction impacts on fauna movements. The ECP was established in 2011.

    Vegetation Offsets Project
Planting of 183ha of RET 12.3.3 E. tereticornis dominated forest on alluvial flats to offset the forest cleared to accommodate the dam inundation. The VOP was established in 2012.

Verterra carried out Field Assessment and delivered a comprehensive monitoring report to meet all State and Federal requirements. The Field Assessment included: Environmental Corridor – RMUs – 22 measure plots; Environmental Corridor - AMUs (Regrowth) 11 measure plots; Environmental Corridor - AMUs (Remnant) 8 measure plots; Vegetation Offset - revegetation - 8 measure plots and 29 photo-only points; Vegetation Offset - assisted regrowth - 11 measure plots.

  • Challenge:

Two major offsets projects were undertaken at Wyaralong Dam, ECP and VOP established in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The Queensland Co-ordinator General and Federal Environment Department require that these offsets achieve remnant status. There are slightly differing requirements between these two regulatory bodies.

  • Solution:

Verterra brought its prior knowledge of these project having previously undertaken the establishment works for both as well as preparing a comprehensive Vegetation Management Monitoring and Reporting Plan (VMMRP, 2012) to ensure performance was assessed and reported to meet all State and Federal requirements. The VMMRP included native vegetation monitoring with the planted assets. Monitoring and reporting was delivered by Verterra until the end of 2016. Verterra employed their proven and regulator-approved bio-condition monitoring methodology.

  • Benefit to Client:

Verterra provided Seqwater with a report compliant with State and Federal performance requirements, documenting the assessment of growth diversity and performance towards remnant status. In addition, Verterra included recommendations for future risk management.
