Cyclone Alfred’s impact on Natural Ecosystems

How do cyclones impact our local ecosystems? 🌪

As cyclone Alfred swept over southeast Queensland this past weekend, the damage extends beyond human life and property- natural ecosystems have also been heavily impacted.

Intense winds and heavy rainfall can devastate vegetation and natural land structures, displacing native wildlife and disrupting their habitats. Coastal ecosystems, like mangroves and coral reefs, are particularly vulnerable. Storm surges can erode coastlines and cause coral bleaching, while the erosion of coastal dune systems threatens vital nesting sites for birds and sea turtles.

However, there are ways we can help our ecosystems recover. As a community, we can:
- Report stranded or injured wildlife to local councils or wildlife organizations.
- Notify authorities about fallen trees or damaged habitats.
- Participate in shoreline and riparian clean-up days to help restore natural areas.

Most importantly, prioritize safety for yourselves and others.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, now and in the weeks to come.
