Reef Credit GLM Method Approval

Verterra is very happy to announce that our Reef Credit method for sediment reduction through grazing land management, has been approved by EcoMarkets Australia!

Developed by Verterra in partnership with GreenCollar and AgriProve, this innovative approach not only enhances grazing productivity but also contributes significantly to the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Reef Credits are a certified ecosystem service credit that rewards positive environmental stewardship and sustainable land management in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments.

Similar to carbon credits, landholders can sign up to a project, and earn credits by altering land management practices, to deliver quantifiable reduction in sediment loss from grazing land and associated improvements in reef water quality. These credits can then be sold to investors looking to offset environmental activities.

Cattle grazing is the dominant land across the Great Barrier Reef catchments, covering 73% of the region. Traditional grazing practices contribute a large proportion of sediment runoff to the Reef, resulting in harm to coral and seagrass ecosystems.  Through the introduction of improved grazing management practices that maintain a higher level of groundcover fine sediment loss can be reduced and grazing productivity improved.

The method has been demonstrated to not only increase productivity and profitability, but also provides a new stream of income, as well as a lasting positive impact on the Great Barrier Reef.
