Restoring Soil Function for Landscape Performance

ReVive is Verterra’s proprietary soil decision-support tool, designed to identify soil constraints and develop targeted interventions that restore functionality to the soil–water–vegetation system.

By addressing the underlying soil constraints that limit plant growth and ecosystem function, ReVive helps create the conditions for successful rehabilitation, productive land use, and resilient landscapes.

When landscapes fail to perform, the solution often lies below the surface.

ReVive was developed by Verterra to assess soils and restore functionality to avoid the risk of rehabilitation failure or limited productivity. ReVive helps assess soil constraints and develop tailored amelioration solutions. Common constraints include:

Soil sodicity and salinity

Poor soil structure and limited water holding capacity

Illustration of erosion

Limited topsoil or growth media resources

Nutrient deficiencies and impared nutrient cycling

ReVive restores soil function by applying ecological engineering principles to the soil-water-vegetation system. We diagnose constraints, design targeted interventions, and implement fit-for-purpose soil and growth media solutions that support long-term ecosystem performance.

Soil Constraint Diagnosis

We assess the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils to identify the factors limiting performance.

Targeted Soil Amelioration

We design and apply treatments to address key constraints - improving structure, nutrient availability and water dynamics.

System Integration

Soil solutions are integrated with vegetation, water and landform design to ensure whole-of system performance.

Growth Media Design

Where natural soils are insufficient, we develop engineered growth media tailored to site conditions and objectives.

How ReVive Works

ReVive is delivered through Verterra’s Performance Ecosystem, playing a critical role as both a stand-alone service and integrated with other services within our whole-of-system approach.

  • We assess soil properties, landscape conditions and limiting factors to establish a clear baseline. We can work with supplied data, or carry out field sampling and laboratory analysis depending on client needs.

    Includes:

    • Defining scope and available data

    • Establishing intended land use or end goal

    • Mapping site with VerterraPROVE, and determining sampling density (if required)

    • Field sampling and laboratory analysis (if required)

  • We design and implement soil amelioration and growth media solutions to improve structure, fertility, and water dynamics.

    This includes:

    • Data processing and input into our proprietary ReVive soil amelioration tool

    • Benchmarking and interpreting results against ideal ranges for intended end use

    • Classifying the site into soil types and management units

    • Targeted amelioration design based on identifed soil types and management units

    • Matching ameliorants and application rates to soil requirements and tailoring recommendations

    • On-ground implementation (if required)

  • By restoring soil function, ReVive supports successful rehabilitation, improved productivity and resilient ecosystems, while avoiding costly rework.

    Optional Add-ons:

    • Build on healthy soil foundations with landform design and ecosystem establishment through ReVert Landscape Rehabilitation

    • Establish high value ecosystems, build natural capital, and access environmental markets through ReValue Ecosystems

IMPROVE focuses on rehabilitating, restoring, and optimizing ecosystems. VALUE emphasizes recovering, reusing, and capitalizing on resources, with recycling symbols at the bottom.

ReVive can be applied across a range of systems and landscapes:
